Experiments with film - Part II

Trying out Ilford's black and white film XP2 as my default go to film for B&W work!

XP2 is a film that uses "colour chemistry" for development. It allows for quick development and scanning and like many colour negative films is very forgiving so long as you err towards overexposing. The scans seem to need a bit of extra contrast and I get a fine grained image with deep blacks.

One interesting twist is you can change the ISO setting between 100 to 400 across a roll to control contrast as light levels change during the day and when moving between inside and outside.

The next step is to explore push processing of XP2 for low light indoor photos when the film will be used at ISO 800. If that doesn't work out I'll rely on Ilford's HP5 pushed one stop.

For even faster speeds for indoor and night time shooting I'll trying Ilfords Delta 3200 at a range of speeds and processing With winter approaching it seems I'll have plenty of low-light situations to try out!

Experiments with film Part I

Some images from an evening wander around Chipping Sodbury in July.

The Kodak Ektar film looks very classic to my eye - a touch of extra contrast to the scans and I'm happy to have found a great film for "places and things" when there is lots of light.

Sidmouth

A trip to the seaside during week 42 ... the answer to everything!

Redcliffs of the Jurassic Coast

Walk around Chepstow

The photo club held an inter club competition on the 10th Oct which prompted a few hours wandering around Chepstow from early doors to late afternoon looking for some suitable images.

A couple of dramatic pre-dawn images made the early start worthwhile.

I took along a film camera to try out some B&W films but have to admit after a 5.45am start I ran out of steam in the late afternoon so only used one type, Ilford's XP2, and I'm looking forward to seeing what those are like once developing and scanning is done!
